Pictured above is my maternal grandmother.
The stamp below her passport photo reads: Landed as Transmigrant under bond 20 JUL 1921 IMMIGRATION OFFICER HARWICH This is what I know about my grandmother's entry to this country: She traveled from Warsaw to Rotterdam. There she boarded a ship named the Cassandra for the ten-day voyage to Quebec, Canada. She spoke neither English nor French. In Quebec, kind volunteers wrote her name and destination on a card which they hung around her neck, and put her on a train bound for Atlanta, where family awaited. Here is what I have found online as I try to piece together more details of this journey: There was a rail station located in Harwich, MA on Cape Cod from 1865 to 1940. This was likely where Sarah first set foot on U.S. soil, as she was officially permitted to enter and board a southbound train. ![]() Left to right: Aunt Sarah (Big Sarah), Grandma Sadie, little Estera, Grandma Sarah (Little Sarah), Mom, Grandpa Abe, Zelda in arms. We are on the front porch of Sarah and Abe's house in Atlanta.
