Notice anything interesting in the chart above? First cousin marriages were not uncommon among the Jews of Europe. As the stories have come down to me, the marriages you see here on both the Gordon and Citron sides were not arranged, but they were not discouraged. They are also not unique. As these charts are expanded to show siblings and cousins, more examples of "keeping it in the family" will emerge. And as for filling in the blanks of history, we might reasonably assume more intermarriages, which would mean fewer blanks to complete, but I'm not hopeful about filling in earlier generations. Jewish last names were not routinely assigned or recorded until the 19th century; and the first names, generally Hebrew biblical names and their Yiddish derivatives, were chosen in remembrance of deceased relatives. In other words, following the first names will take you down a hall of mirrors. The information I have assembled here is based on information provided by my grandmothers, both of whom knew their extended families and their family histories well. Are we related? Do you have more info? Please get in touch.
